At the forefront of energy efficiency in New Brunswick.

We were the first Net-Zero builders in New Brunswick — and we completed the first certified Net-Zero house in the province. Two generations and 47 years of award-winning design-builds and renovations, serving the greater Saint John area.

A pattern, decades long

First in. Every time.

MCL has a habit of being the first New Brunswick builder to certify the next standard in residential energy performance. Each milestone below is sourced from the company’s own record and from public reporting on its work.

  1. 1978
    MCL Construction is founded.
Bob & Lynn McLaughlin found the company — a family-owned design-build practice rooted in the greater Saint John area.
  2. ~1982
First R-2000 home in New Brunswick.
An early adoption of the federal R-2000 standard for energy-efficient housing — thirty-plus years before the province’s first certified Net-Zero milestone.
  3. 2017
New Brunswick’s first certified Net-Zero home.
A two-storey, three-bedroom home in Quispamsis — certified by both the federal government and the Canadian Home Builders Association.
  4. Today
    Brad leads the second generation.
    Renovations, design-builds, and net-zero housing — the same hands-on, end-to-end model.
What we do

Three lines of work. One standard.

01

Renovations

Award-winning renovations that bring older homes up to modern performance standards — the same energy-efficiency thinking we apply to new builds, retrofitted into homes already on the ground.

02

Design-Builds

A complete service: design through construction through clean-up. We take care of everything from the first sketch to the final walk-through — one team, one accountability, one finished home.

03

Net-Zero Housing

Homes that produce, on average, as much energy as they consume. We were the first New Brunswick builder to certify one — and we’ve continued to refine the build science ever since.

The Net-Zero work

A house that makes more energy than it uses.

In 2017, MCL completed New Brunswick’s first certified Net-Zero home in Quispamsis. It is a working blueprint for how the standard is built — and a record of what we’ve refined since.

Envelope
  • Extensive insulation underneath the concrete foundation
  • Thermal barriers around the entire structure — footings to rafters
  • High-performance windows and increased insulation in floors, walls, and roof
Energy
  • South-facing roof design to maximise solar capture
  • Roof-mounted solar panels generating on-site energy
  • Battery backup that charges from surplus and runs the home through outages
Systems
  • Low-flow velocity heat pump system
  • Heat-pump hot-water tank
  • Triple-glazed windows and an advanced ventilation system
~80%
A net-zero home, built to MCL’s standard, is up to 80% more efficient than a conventionally built home of the same size. The remainder — the energy the house does consume — is offset by what it generates on its own roof.
